Inclusion or Exclusion?

Thank you to Darren, one of our full-time trainees, for reminding us about the School Season currently showing on the BBC. Tonight's offering was a Secondary based drama about 'Mark' who had issues with behaviour. Although set in the compulsory sector, I thought there were a number of useful aspects for consideration for PCET trainees:

1) Did the different approaches to classroom management, as show by the three male teachers, elicit different behaviour responses from the learners? Which style would you adopt?

2) Ian clearly wanted to help the learners understand the 'math's process' rather than just know the answers. Is this always possible or was Gary's approach the only 'survival technique'?

3) How did you feel about Ian's first class as an NQT? On reflection, how will you approach your first class in the next few weeks?!

4) Gary seemed to command respect from the majority of the learners but was quite confrontational (see clip below). Having got himself into the situation - how did you feel Gary handled it?

5) Ian had moved from a 'perfectly good job' into teaching. What is your motivation for training to be a teacher? We will be discussing personal philosophies of teaching soon in CET1401/PET3601.

Looking forward to Monday's programme - the 'Classroom Experiment' - 9pm BBC2.

Check out the Behaviour 4 Learning website for information and advice on classroom management.
